2024 Oklahoma FCA Hall of Champions

Jerry & Suzanne Bugg

Jerry and Suzanne Bugg have been active supporters of Oklahoma FCA for over 50 years.  Their friendship and association with Chuck and Betty Bowman and Gary and Elaine Lower began in the early seventies.

Born and raised in OKC, Jerry was in the car rental business for over 70 years beginning with National Car Rental, then transitioning to Dollar and Thrifty Car Rental. The Buggs provided FCA staff with donated cars to drive throughout Oklahoma for their FCA work.

Over the years, Jerry and Suzanne have been faithful supporters of FCA, both financially and prayerfully. During the years of the annual FCA auction, the Buggs were one of the largest donors of auction items.  They’ve been regulars at the annual auctions, All-State banquets and have attended FCA reunions in Estes Park, Colorado.  The Buggs have sponsored countless students to attend FCA summer camps, many who would otherwise be unable to attend. Jerry and Suzanne love FCA. This love has shown itself in the many lives impacted by their quiet influence and generosity.

Jerry and Suzanne have three children, ten grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.  They currently attend Crossings Community Church in Oklahoma City.

Lew Erickson

Lew Ellen Erickson “Lew” has a passion for serving, which is a heritage that was passed on to her by her parents.   The Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been an important part of the Erickson family.  Lew’s father, John Erickson, was a basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin.  In the 1960’s, his life was changed at an FCA Conference in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin by Bob Petit, an NBA basketball player for the St. Louis Hawks.  John Erickson went on to become the National President of FCA from 1972-1988.  Coincidentally, FCA expanded to women just as Lew entered high school and she was a part of her first FCA huddle.

Lew learned the game of golf from her mother, a championship golfer.   She was a junior golfer in the State of Kansas, holding the record for winning 9 straight consecutive high school tournaments, as well as the High School State Championship. She attended Oklahoma State University, where she was active in the FCA huddle and played on the Cowgirl Golf Team. After graduating Lew moved to Tulsa, working for a short period in the golf industry, but soon began her career in banking.  It was banking that gave her the opportunity to pursue two of her passions– Golf and God.  She has been actively involved in Oklahoma FCA since 1977, serving on the local and state FCA Boards, while organizing, participating and supporting many areas of the ministry.

Lew has served her community as a past chairman of the American Heart Association Board, a member of the YWCA Board and as a Young Life Committee member.  She has volunteered for the USGA as a golf rules official for over 30 years, while also serving on the Oklahoma Golf Hall of Fame Board, First Tee of Tulsa and The Common Good.  Lew is a member of Redeemer Covenant Church in Tulsa.

David Jackson

David Jackson is the Executive Director of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association (OSSAA).  In 1996, Jackson had a chance meeting with then OSSAA director Bill Self Sr.  Jackson was hired at the OSSAA and has been there since.

Jackson was introduced to FCA as a high school student in Pauls Valley in 1977 by John O’Dell.  He was actively involved in FCA as a high school athlete and as a college student.  After receiving his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from East Central University in Ada, Jackson began his teaching and coaching career in his home town of Pauls Valley.  There he coached football, basketball, track, and later served as the Head Principal from 1990-1996.  Jackson was the FCA sponsor as a coach and administrator there.

Jackson served the OSSAA as Assistant Director, then Associate Executive Director, with primary areas of responsibility in football, large school basketball, track and field, and eligibility.  He was named the OSSAA Executive Director in 2016.

Jackson has held various committee positions within the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS), serving on the NFHS Board of Directors and as NFHS Board President.  Because of Hal Clifford’s recommendation, David became an FCA Executive Board Member.  He has also been a board member for Britton Christian Church, Life Change Ballroom, and served on the Advisory Council of Stanley Hupfeld Academy at Western Village.

Jackson and his wife Charlotte, who is a Special Ed Teacher at Edmond Santa Fe High School, have been married for 36 years.  The Jacksons have twin 34-year-olds.

The ministry of FCA has been an integral part of his life, helping to shape him as a husband, father, employee, and friend.  He strives to impact others in the same way those leaders in FCA have impacted his life.

Steve Kunkle

Originally from Hurst, Texas, and a resident of Albuquerque, New Mexico since 1979, Steve Kunkle’s story is the story of FCA.  As a 9th grader, Steve attended a high school FCA meeting and soon received Christ.  Steve and his best friend, Scott Hill, led FCA at Bell High School in Hurst, and determined that they wanted to play football together in college. The good thing for Steve was that Scott was the number one football prospect in the state of Texas.

While Steve was a linebacker at OU from 1972-75, the team won two national titles and four Big Eight championships, losing just two games.  As a senior, Steve was the president of the OU FCA chapter, under the direction of Coach Don Jimerson, a fellow Oklahoma FCA Hall of Champion. Steve also met his wife Melissa, who was a member of the Sooners’ cheer squad while at OU.

Steve & Melissa claim that three of the best years of their lives were while on the staff of FCA.  Steve served as a Field Representative from 1976-1979, primarily in Northeast Oklahoma.  While on staff, Steve created the annual College Retreat (which continues today), hosted high school weekend retreats, and coordinated many other events.  Steve was incredibly effective at visiting schools, discipling athletes, and leading coaches’ bible studies.  His calling was to impact lives for Christ and he fulfilled that calling through his work with Oklahoma FCA.

Steve went on to become an associate pastor at Hoffman Town Baptist Church in Albuquerque and has owned a State Farm agency in Albuquerque for the last 40 years.  Steve & Melissa have 4 children and 6 grandchildren.

Kenny Mossman

Kenny Mossman became the pastor at First Baptist Church in Carnegie, Oklahoma, in February of 2022, but his path to the pastorate was unconventional. He first worked 33 years in NCAA Division I athletics including his final 20 at the University of Oklahoma.

At OU, Mossman supervised seven external units in the athletics department including marketing, ticket broadcasting, and communications. As a sport administrator, he had day-to-day oversight of the football and softball programs. He also served on the College Football Playoff Advisory Committee.

Prior to his time at OU, he served as associate athletics director at Illinois State and sports information director at Kansas State.

Aside from his administrative duties, Mossman also worked extensively in radio and television sportscasting and taught in mass communications at OU for 16 years. He received the inaugural Kelso Award for teaching excellence by adjunct professors.

Mossman is currently on the Nominating Committee for Oklahoma Baptists, and he previously served two stints as chairman of the Oklahoma ERLC for the Oklahoma Baptists.  He has served as chair of the Executive Board for Oklahoma FCA and has been the “Master of Ceremonies” for many FCA banquets and events throughout the years.

Mossman holds a bachelor’s degree from Southwestern (Kansas) College, where he is a member of the athletics hall of fame, a master’s degree from Kansas State, and has completed partial work towards a master’s degree at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Amy, have four children.

Bob & Kennie Smith

Bob Smith used sports and imagination to carve out a most improbable career. Born and raised in Stillwater, as a high school junior he quarterbacked the Pioneers to their first state football championship.  After a disappointing senior season, a tryout at Northeastern A&M Junior College turned into a scholarship. By year’s end, he was the placekicker on NEO’s 1969 JUCO National Championship Football Team.

Encouraged by then NEO head Coach Chuck Bowman, Smith attended an FCA Summer Conference in Fayetteville, Arkansas in 1970. This decision changed his life.

In 1971, he accepted a football scholarship to Drake University. Smith was the Bulldogs’ backup quarterback and record setting placekicker. While earning his Broadcast Journalism Degree at Drake, he also worked part time at WHO Television in Des Moines, Iowa.

Smith signed a free agent contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. A chance meeting with NFL Films President Steve Sabol turned into a playing field interview, and a career only God could have envisioned.

Released by the Chiefs and Bears, Smith was hired by NFL Films as a Director & Cameraman. During a 38-year career, he earned more than 25 Emmy Awards, and advanced NFL Films to become sport’s premier film company.

Kennie, Bob’s wife of 53 years, was hired at NFL Films in 1976.  Her career began as a film librarian. In 2003 she became the first woman VP of Project Management. She retired in 2018.

Bob & Kennie both made decisions for Christ at FCA Summer Conferences. Recently, they created the “FCA Legends Series”.  This collection of short films tells the stories of men and women that God used to construct the amazing ministry that is the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
